Carpet is expensive. A quality carpet with professional installation is about $35 - $40 per m2. That means that an average bedroom (3.5m x 4m) would cost $490. That’s over TWENTY SEVEN HUNDRED DOLARS for five rooms and hallway! A premium carpet could double this figure.  Since carpet is such a large investment, doesn’t it make sense to protect and care for it? By extending the life of your carpet, you will be saving an enormous amount of money.

The average carpet will last a family about 10-12 years before it wears out. A neglected carpet won’t last half that long! That translates to thousands of dollars you’d lose. If you have to replace your carpet every 5 years instead of 12 years, over the next twenty five years, you will lose at least eight thousand dollars. WOW! That doesn’t have to happen to you.

Read our 7 secrets to keep your carpet looking beautiful longer. You’ll learn how to get the most enjoyment out of your beautiful floor covering.

Here are the 7 secrets:

1. SLOW DOWN – The biggest mistake most people while vacuuming is going too fast.  In the higher traffic areas you should do at least 4 slow vacuums passes over each area.  This allows the vacuum cleaner to remove more of the heavy, gritty dire that is deeply embedded in the carpet yarns.  The sandy gritty dirt that gets deeply lodged in your carpet grinds away at the fibres like sandpaper, and is the primary cause of premature wear.

2. DO IT OFTEN – Areas where people walk in from outside, high-use rooms and traffic areas should be vacuumed as often as pollable.  You can’t hurt a carpet by vacuuming it often.  Daily is not overkill in high traffic areas, but realistically, try for at least twice a week.  For all other areas once a week is a minimum.

3. KEEP IT SERVICED – Once a year, have your vacuum cleaner tuned up.  A good vacuum shop will take the machine apart, clean and inspect the internal parts, and motor, replace worn or broken brushes and belts, and lubricate were appropriate.  Also, make sure that your vacuum cleaner bag is never more than two-thirds full, it may restrict as much as 30% or more of the airflow.  Keep hoses and attachments clean and free of debris build-up.

4. LEAVE DIRT OUTSIDE - Most of the damage-causing soil is tracked in from outside.  Doormats can prevent much of it from ever entering your home.  Too bad you can’t teach your pets to wipe their feet, huh?

5. OOPS?  ACT FAST!  Most modern carpet comes from the factory with built-in Stain Resist properties.  DuPont Teflon and 3M Scotchgard are the two most popular brands.  These products do not make you carpet stain proof, but can help prevent permanent staining, with prompt attention to spots and spills.  Remember… Blot.  Don’t scrub.  And never use harsh detergents!

6. CALL A PRO.  You knew we were going to say that.  But, it’s true.  Carpet mills recommend professional carpet cleaning once a year: more often if there is heavy traffic, kids or pets.

7. PROTECT YOUR ASSETS – Most carpet has stain–protector applied at the factory.  However, foot traffic and vacuuming eventually wear through the factory-applied finish.  Most carpet manufacturers recommend that you have the carpet protected within 3 years of purchase, and one a year thereafter.  Doing so will easily pay for itself over the life of your carpet.
